Definition of Fisheries and its Importance

Define Fisheries:

The scientific knowledge of raising or harvesting fish and other aquatic organisms for human consumption as well as recreational purposes is called fisheries. It can also involve raising fish for ornamental purposes or for the production of fish by products like fish oil.

The natural or managed cultivation of shellfish, fish, and seaweed in freshwater and marine habitats is known as aquaculture, commonly known as "fish farming". Fisheries are not only concerned with capturing wild fish but also growing and harvesting fish in an aquaculture or fish farming setting.

Over 10% of the world's workforce, including many women, is employed in fisheries aquaculture sector, which constantly provides food for hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Importance of Fisheries

  • Fish are involved in the dynamics of the food chain, the cycling of nutrients, and the resilience of ecosystems. Fish serve as a functional reservoir of energy, nutrients, genetic material, and information for ecological systems because their mobility within the nested set of temporal and spatial cycles helps to govern ecological systems.
  • A variety of fish byproducts are valuable to industry. These by-products include fish oil, fish meat, fertilizer, fish glue, and others. These by-products are frequently utilized in paints, soaps, oils, and medications.
  • By serving as key sources of animal protein, vital nutrients, and money, the fishing industry greatly contributes to both food security and economic security.
  • Proteins, vitamins, and micronutrients from fisheries are a valuable source because they are not present in crops or other animal products in the same quantity or variety.

Classification of Fisheries:

  1. Inland/fresh water and marine/salt water fisheries are the two primary categories of fisheries.
  2. Fishing is a form of economic activity that involves catching fish or other aquatic organisms in the wild (capture fishing) or rearing them in captivity (aquaculture/culture fishing).
  3. Traditional/ Small Scale Fisheries (SSF) or large-scale/ commercial fishing are two possible types.
